Barabbas' Dream is set in Ireland, where each of the three sets of characters is inspired by a particular, historical influence. The "nobles" are the Anglo-Irish ascendancy. The "mechanicals" are ordinary working people and the "fairies" are magical figures of Irish mythology. Barabbas' Dream looks at these various components of Irish identity through the play in which all 21 characters are played by a cast of six.
